Sludge management and dewatering

Cut industrial sludge volumes and disposal costs with our Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) thickening, belt presses, G‑Tube containers, pumps, and agitators for industrial wastewater.
Key Sulzer equipment for sludge handling:
  • Primary & thickening: DAF units, belt filters, Zickert scraper, tank agitators
  • Mechanical dewatering: belt filter press, multi-disc screw press, containerized G‑Tube
  • Pumping: sludge transfer pumps, PC cake pumps, RAS pumps, dosing pumps
Industrial wastewater treatment trains inevitably produce sludge. Effective sludge thickening and dewatering cuts haulage costs, lowers disposal fees, and keeps plant operations compliant. We deliver equipment that transforms dilute slurries into high‑solids cakes, ready for off‑site transport or further valorization, while integrating seamlessly with upstream treatment.
Our solutions across the sludge cycle

From the moment solids leave primary clarification to final cake pumping, our technologies optimize every step:

  • DAF thickening: our Dissolved Air Flotation systems concentrate sludge to ~4 – 6 % Dry Solids (DS), which constitutes a four‑ to six‑fold volume reduction and provides an efficient first stage before mechanical dewatering.
  • Primary belt filtration: Band or belt filters capture fibers and fines early, reducing downstream sludge generation and saving aeration power.
  • Mechanical dewatering: Choose the compact belt filter press, high‑capacity multi-disc screw press, or our containerized G‑Tube roll‑off solution. G‑Tube retains solids in a disposable geotextile bag while filtrate recycles to process—perfect for seasonal campaigns or remote sites.
  • Pumping and transfer: Our portfolio covers every duty - from Progressing Cavity (PC) cake pumps and dosing pumps, through rugged sludge transfer pumps, to energy‑efficient Return Activated Sludge (RAS) pumps safeguarding biology
  • Mixing and agitation: High‑rate static, in-tank and pipe mixers rapidly disperse coagulant, while lower‑velocity pipe flocculators and in‑tank SALOMIX™ / Scaba agitators gently build flocs. This approach maximizes solids capture in DAF cells, lamella settlers, clarifiers, and sludge thickening tanks.
  • Thickened‑sludge removal: Zickert sludge scrapers retrofit easily into lamella or gravity clarifiers, ensuring reliable solids harvesting.

Why sludge thickening matters
A 1 % DS sludge contains 99 % water. Thickening it to about 6 % DS (typical feed strength for wet digesters) reduces volume by roughly 85 %, slashing tanker movements and carbon footprint. Mechanical dewatering with a belt filter press or multi-disc screw press can raise solids up to and beyond 20% DS, minimizing disposal tonnage and gate fees and delivering a cake suitable for waste‑to‑energy routes.
