Sulzer's chemical recycling technologies turn plastic waste into the circular raw materials modern industry demands.

Backed by 80+ years of separation expertise and a proven track record in technology licensing, Sulzer Chemtech provides end-to-end plastic waste solutions — from mixed plastics pyrolysis through to high-purity monomer recovery. Our proprietary technology portfolio covers critical stages of the chemical recycling value chain, so operators can reduce CAPEX, eliminate fouling downtime, and consistently meet feedstock quality targets at industrial scale.

Sulzer value recycling: Four proprietary technologies, one complete solution

From the first rapid quench of pyrolysis gases through to the final purification of circular feedstock each technology in the Sulzer Value Recycling portfolio solves a specific challenge that prevents chemical recycling from reaching commercial scale. Click any segment to explore the technology.

EcoStyrene™ MaxFlux™ PyroCon™ PyroCare™
Pyrolysis Oil Purification
PyroCare™
Transform crude pyrolysis oil into polished oils.
Crude Pyoil from plastic waste carries contaminants such as chloride, nitrogenates, oxygenates, sulfur and metals that disqualify it from (petro)chemical integration without proper treatment. PyroCare™ is Sulzer's suite of technologies that removes the contaminant barrier between raw output and specification-grade circular feedstock. The technologies have been developed to be able to be integrated in a cost-effective manner, without extensive utility integration and as well at smaller scale.
Polystyrene Chemical Recycling
EcoStyrene™
Contaminated polystyrene waste → food-grade virgin styrene monomer.
EcoStyrene™ ; in cooperation with a technology partner, is Sulzer's chemical recycling technology for polystyrene. Where conventional methods demand pristine feedstock, EcoStyrene™ accepts contaminated PS — including flame retardants and food residue — and delivers virgin-quality styrene monomer approved for the most demanding food contact applications. It turns currently rejected waste stream into a high-value circular asset.
Pyrolysis Oil Upgrading
MaxFlux™
Transform crude pyrolysis oil into naptha-like oils.
MaxFlux™, in cooperation with Duke Technologies, is a unique liquid-full hydrotreating process that upgrades plastic pyrolysis oil (PPO) to naphtha-like properties — enabling direct use in steam crackers and petrochemical plants. The technical benefits of the novel reactor technology translates into significant CAPEX and OPEX benefits. Thus making projects at the same capacity more attractive or capable in delivering positive business cases at a smaller scale.
Advanced Pyrolysis Quenching
PyroCon™
Reliable quenching and condensation technology.
PyroCon™ is Sulzer's advanced quenching technology for chemical recycling processes. Optimized according to client requirements, the PyroCon designs robustly handle different challenges associated with quenching and condensation of plastic pyrolysis oils such as waxex, oligomers, solids, aerosols and more. Plants running PyroCon™ have maintained continuous operation since mid-2019.
