Excellent pump reliability for sugar production

Sugar production starts with either sugar cane or sugar beet. Both present their own processing challenges, all the way from raw material to finished end product.

The equipment used is exposed to fibrous materials, entrained gases, cavitation, chemical attacks, increased temperatures and high viscosity liquids. Having the right pumps and agitators is therefore critical, especially if no stand-by units are available. With adequate products for each application, only some routine maintenance is required during the planned shutdown period.

Sulzer offers a comprehensive portfolio of innovative pumps, agitators, mixers, aerators and compressors for sugar production processes:

Advanced pumping and mixing solutions for the starch and sweeteners production

Sulzer’s pumps and agitators have repeatedly proven their worth in demanding in starch and starch-based sweetener production. Our deep understanding of the special requirements of starch and sweeteners production allow us to provide reliable pumping solutions to meet the needs of our customers.

A common problem in the starch production is foam formation. It arises partly because of the protein content of the pumped liquids and partly because the different raw material components are separated mechanically.

Degassing pumps are crucial problem solvers in many starch applications, whether the source is corn, wheat, potatoes or tapioca. The AHLSTAR self-priming gas removal pump is the perfect solution to pump these foamy liquids, and at the same time remove significant amounts of the troublesome air to help with downstream processing.

Sulzer offers a comprehensive portfolio of innovative pumps, agitator, mixers, aerators and compressors for starch and sweetener production processes:

  • Steeping
  • Milling
  • Fiber separation
  • Starch separation

Products
  • ISO 5199 process pumps
The international standard ISO 5199 specifies the requirements for class II end-suction centrifugal pumps of single-stage, multistage, horizontal or vertical construction, with any drive and any installation for general application. Process pumps used in the chemical process industries (e.g those conforming to ISO 2858) are typical of those covered by this international standard.

  • CPE ANSI process pumps range (ANSI/ASME B73.1)
CPE ANSI pumps are specifically designed to exceed the strictest energy regulations for all industries as well as the requirements of ASME B73.1. With revolutionary hydraulics and high efficiency, they offer the lowest life cycle costs.

  • Slurry pumps
Slurry pumps are used in solids containing applications. Depending on process conditions, equipment should be suitable for highly abrasive or corrosive liquids. Sulzer offers a complete range of slurry pumps specially designed to handle light to severe slurry duty.

  • SMD axially split casing double suction pump
The SMD water pumps are available as standard and configured pumps to meet the demands of different water applications. With a best-in-class hydraulic design, the SMD pumps can take on challenges in raw, clean, sea and brackish water applications. The clean water pumps have ACS and NSF 61 drinking water certifications.

  • Ring section pumps
Sulzer has a long tradition of supplying ring section mid- to high-pressure pumps to all kinds of industrial applications. The M-series is designed in a modular way based on different ranges of pressures for use in a wide range of applications, primarily for pumping clean or slightly polluted liquids.

  • Vertical sump pumps
Vertical sump pumps are intended for use in the industrial pumping applications to pump clean or lightly contaminated liquids, fibrous slurries and liquids containing large solids from the deep sumps. The pumping head is suspended into the pumped liquids and the drive motor is dry installed on the top.

  • Progressing cavity pumps
Sulzer offers a range of progressing cavity pumps for demanding positive displacement process applications. Our pumps provide a near constant flow rate and suction lift capability for handling wastewater sludge, slurries, viscous and shear thinning non-Newtonian fluids.

  • Axial flow pumps
Axial flow pumps, also known as elbow or propeller pumps, are used in high flow and low head applications. Sulzer offers a complete range of low and high pressure, horizontal and vertical axial flow pumps especially designed to handle severe pumping conditions.

  • Agitators, dynamic mixers
Sulzer SALOMIX™ and Scaba mixing and agitation technology offers a wide range of products for industrial applications. Side-mounted horizontal and top-mounted vertical agitators, dynamic chemical mixers, and tower and tank flow management products guarantee effective mixing and agitating processes.

  • Submersible heavy duty pumps
For industrial, municipal and larger commercial properties, Sulzer has a range of heavy duty wastewater submersible pumps type ABS designed to handle wastewater with high levels of rags and other contaminations including solids.

  • Submersible mixers
Sulzer's energy efficient submersible mixers are suitable for a wide range of applications in industry and municipal treatment plants. They provide the right solution to match mixing tasks for agitating, blending, mixing, dissolving and suspension of solids in industry and municipal treatment plants.

  • Compressors and aeration
