The challenge

The inlet equipment at Horsens WWTP was outdated, with high maintenance costs and poor environmental performance. The customer needed a modern system to improve performance, reduce costs, and meet current environmental standards. As the plant could not close for the length of the upgrade, it had to find a solution for rerouting wastewater while the work was carried out. Any delays would incur penalties, making it vital that both the main installation and the temporary setup were managed seamlessly.

The solution

Sulzer developed a container-based pumping system that allowed wastewater to bypass the inlet area during construction. The design integrated screens supplied by Nordic Water as well as screw-wash-presses within a compact setup. By renting the system to the customer, Sulzer could control costs and reduce the financial risks to all parties. In the main installation, Sulzer replaced the outdated equipment with an efficient step screen system, restructuring the facility to fit the new layout.

Customer benefit

The customer gained a top-quality inlet system with increased capture rates, better control of screenings’ dryness, and reduced maintenance needs. Sulzer offered a single point of contact for the rental pumping solution and all aspects of the upgrade, cutting costs by nearly 30% compared to working with a third party, while minimizing risk and simplifying project management with an innovative rental solution.

With Sulzer handling both the inlet upgrade and rental pumping solutions, we simplified communication, reduced risk, and saved costs—it was a real win-win.
