Main benefits
  • Industry-leading efficiency
  • Lowest operational costs
  • Optimum balance of forces and thrust
  • Modular design
  • Maintenance-free bearings
Main applications
  • High pressure RO membrane feed
Creating fresh water using reverse osmosis (RO) requires reliable and cost-effective equipment to ensure the local consumers receive an affordable and dependable supply of water.

The MSN-RO membrane feed pumps have a proven, robust design that has been fine-tuned over years of operating in the desalination sector. Engineered to meet the individual requirements of each application, our axial split multistage pumps deliver optimum performance in this challenging environment.
Main design features

Optimized design

  • Extensive Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to rigorously validate hydraulic design

Seal systems

  • Mechanical cartridge seals (Plan 11 or 13)
  • Shaft seal can be serviced without disassembling the pump

Maintenance-free bearings

  • Product-lubricated bearings as standard
  • Continuous uptime
  • Long maintenance intervals, with all wear parts easily accessible without disassembling pump connections from pipework
  • Requires only one mechanical seal on the drive end
  • Smaller pump footprint

Optimum balance

  • Balance disc for fully axially balanced rotor
  • No axial thrust bearings required

Modular design

  • Two to four stages to provide exact membrane feed pressure
  • Two hydraulic designs to meet a wider array of flow requirements

Lowest operational costs

  • Combination of hydraulic design, optimum efficiency and proven reliability
  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Minimized costs for maintenance

Case studies
  • Long-term efficiency and reliability delivered to Torrevieja desalination plant
Like many arid regions around the world, southeastern Spain has long faced significant water shortages. In the early years of the new Millennium, with rising consumer demand and the changing climate exacerbating the challenge, Spain’s government and some regions’ water utilities launched a major desalination initiative. Most of it was developed by Acuamed, which is a public company that reports directly to the Ministry for Environment of the Spanish Government.

  • Sulzer delivers over 200 pump packages for Saudi Arabia’s West Coast - Satellite desalination project
Sulzer’s advanced global engineering and manufacturing network has enabled the company to build, deliver and commission 289 high-efficiency desalination pumps to allow construction of the multiple sites in just 18 months. The short build schedule and large number of pumps required the cooperation of several of Sulzer’s facilities to deliver all the pump skids on time.

  • Tapping into pump engineering expertise
Making clean, safe drinking water widely available is one of human society’s greatest priorities. 90% of the world’s population currently has access to at least a basic source of potable water, and 71% of people enjoy a managed supply of clean water to their homes. With the aim to further increase availability while controlling costs, utilities are continually investing to expand, upgrade and improve their networks, operations and maintenance processes.
