Sulzer Metco Develops Combined Plasma-Nitriding and PVD Coating (29/03/2005, Technical News)
One application: extruder screws.
Metaplas Ionon, a Sulzer Metco company, has developed the 2-in-1 IOMAX coating system, a combination of plasma nitriding (IONIT®) and physical vapor deposition – or PVD – hard coatings (MAXIT®). This system is an efficient tool for the reduction of abrasion and cold bonding for the metal machining and forming industries. The combination of plasma nitriding and PVD is very effective in preventing the formation of corrosion and depositions when processing plastics or elastomer materials. Automotive and other machinery components have also been treated successfully.

Sulzer Hexis—The next generation of fuel cell system (11/04/2005, Technical News)
A fuel cell module (ceramic type) of the next generation (right) compared with the architecture of the cell stack in the pre-series system (left).
The new fuel cell system “Galileo” is smaller, more cost-efficient and easier to operate compared to predecessor HXS 1000. “Galileo” measures only 55 x 160 x 55 cm (L x H x D) and weighs 170 kg—thus a substantial progress has been made. The two plates were replaced by the single-plate design. The weight of the cell stack and the costs of the current collectors are halved. The thermal insulation costs have been reduced to a tenth. The new system will be launched at the Hannover Fair in April 2005. The first systems of the new generation will be delivered in autumn 2005.
