Valero contacted Sulzer Pumps due to the successful cooperation between the two companies—based on an alliance agreement. In view of the limited level of free capacity in the industry at the time, Sulzer Pumps believed that it would be very challenging for any manufacturer to meet a 12-week delivery deadline for a single unit. Given that the project required 4 pumps for 2 different services (2 OHH pumps for the Alkylate service and 2 OHH pumps for the reactor recycle service), Sulzer knew that it would not be able to successfully complete the delivery on schedule using its regular production model. The New Equipment Service and the Customer Support Service (CSS) therefore planned the project and adapted the standard production procedures in order to meet the short delivery deadline. Sulzer Mexico played a key role in coordinating the manufacture of the bare pumps in 8 weeks, using castings machined at Mexico’s service center and the advanced procurement of subvendor items. At the same time, the Houston service center generated drawings and supporting software, fabricated the pump base plates, and coordinated the equipment packaging. The final inspection of the pump units was completed at the Houston service center on schedule, 12 weeks after Sulzer took receipt of the order. The pumps are now in operation at the Texas City refinery. Valero was very pleased with the performance of the equipment, as well as with Sulzer’s rapid response and dedication to customer service. |
