Sulzer Innotec’s Laser Surface Engineering Group has launched a new 1.5-kW fiber laser by the end of 2006. The high-tech laser complements the existing 2-kW CO2 laser, which has been in operation for many years. This move further strengthens Sulzer Innotec’s expertise in the field of laser build-up welding as a means of repair and as a coating method. The mobile system enables laser welding to be performed on site at customer locations for the first time worldwide.

However, materials such as glass fiber or colored pigments increase abrasion and shorten the service life of moulds and machine parts. The dismounting and repair of moulds and tools leads to outages and results in increased production costs.

The purpose of the Tray Expert Forum (TEF) is to obtain feedback from the market about Sulzer Chemtech and its tray portfolio and to highlight its expertise in the manufacturing of high-capacity trays.

Sulzer Metco was one of the 80 exhibitors at the Turbo Expo 2006 in Barcelona (Spain) presenting its developments in the fields of aerospace and IGT industries. Turbo Expo 2006 is the 51st annual technical congress and exposition for the worldwide gas turbine community. It brought together engineers, research scientists, educators and other professionals involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines. The technical congress featured over 750 technical papers with Sulzer Metco being represented in the session “Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy” with the paper “Novel Ceramic Abradable Coatings with Enhanced Performance.”

Sulzer Chemtech Ltd is participating in a new research program “High Pressure Gas Liquid Separation” (HiPGLS) led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway. The duration of the project is 4 years. Besides other vendors, also oil companies such as Statoil, Norsk Hydro, Conoco- Phillips, ExxonMobil, and Shell are participants. The overall objective of the HiPGLS project is “to enhance the understanding and modeling capability of the phenomena governing the separation of liquids from gases at high pressures to such an extent that vendors are able to design and supply compact separators and scrubbers.”
