| CompaX—the same innovative mixer, but with a new name (30/05/2005, Technical News) |
At the Achema 2003, Sulzer Chemtech presented a mixer type with the name “Compact”. Its function is efficient homogenization within a short mixing distance at a limited overall installation length, and at a low pressure drop. The word “Compact” is widely in use, so two years after the launch, another, more specific name had to be found, CompaX. With the CompaX, Sulzer Chemtech is reverting to the price-sensitive mass market and will be consolidating its market presence across the whole spectrum of mixers and mixing applications. Clients in the water and CPI segments will be able to obtain a product from Sulzer with excellent mixing characteristics at a competitive price—only, now with the new name of CompaX.

| Certification as a pioneer for the EU market (14/06/2005, Technical News) |
The Joining Technology and Heat Treatment Group (VTW) has succeeded in having its certification prolonged as a manufacturer of pressure equipment according to European Directive 97/23/EG (PED) for a further three years. A management system certified according to ISO 9001 and EN 729-2, qualified personnel, qualified welding processes and appropriate production equipment represent the important preconditions for the successful extension. As a result, Sulzer Innotec continues to be able to produce new parts and carry out repairs in conformity with the Pressure Equipment Directive. Covered by this are certain vessels and pipelines on machines and installations which are brought into service in the EU.

| Award for Publication by Sulzer Metco WOKA GmbH (27/06/2005, Technical News) |
Andreas Kirsten of Sulzer Metco WOKA GmbH received a certificate of merit by two reputed materials technology associations. The Thermal Spray Society (TSS) and the Deutsche Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e.V. (DVS) honored the paper “Carbide containing materials for hard chromium replacement by HVOF-spraying”. The work by a team of Sulzer Metco WOKA GmbH, consisting of Andreas Kirsten, Manfred Oechsle und Richard-Franz Moll, examines the replacement of hard chromium materials by thermal spray materials. Of particular interest are the tests carried out for the research, which compare the properties of various thermally sprayed coatings of WOKA carbide materials with those of hard chromium coatings.

| MAXIT® AlTiN-mod for hard machining operations (25/07/2005, Technical News) |
At the EMO in Hannover (DE), the world’s leading metalworking trade fair, Metaplas Ionon, a Sulzer Metco Company, is going to present MAXIT® AlTiN-mod. This multilayer coating was specially developed for hard machining operations. The high energy of the Arc process in connection with a doping yields exceptionally good adhesive strength between coating and substrate. Moreover, the doping reduces adhesion to the work piece, making this coating particularly suited for applications involving materials that tend to stick and smear. The combination of high wear resistance and low adhesion brings about a significant increase in performance when processing compound materials. The EMO will take place from 14 to 21 September, 2005.

| New Pump Family for the Pulp and Paper Industry (13/10/2005, Technical News) |
At the 2005 exhibition of the Swedish association of pulp and paper engineers (SPCI) Sulzer Pumps launched AhlstarUP, a new, high efficiency pump family for the pulp and paper industry. In addition to the requirements this segment, the new pumps meet many requirements of the hydrocarbon processing and the oil and gas industries in offsites situations where API 610 standards are not mandated. This applies to shaft sealing, shaft sealing pipework, couplings and explosive atmospheres (ATEX) needs. The new pump series is module changeable so that existing Ahlstar pumps can be updated with more efficient and reliable modules from the new pump series, for example wet end, sealing unit or bearing unit.
