Sulzer Ltd acquired OSU Maschinenbau GmbH, based in Duisburg, Germany. The newly acquired company was previously part of Grillo-Werke Aktiengesellschaft, Duisburg. It occupies an important position in the arc spray segment and focuses on the production and distribution of equipment, as well as the sale of related materials, mostly zinc and zinc-alloyed wires. This acquisition will enable Sulzer Metco to strengthen its position in the arc-spray equipment market.

In a recent market survey by Frost & Sullivan (London) on European power plant maintenance repair and overhaul strategies, Sulzer Elbar, a subsidiary of Sulzer Turbomachinery Services, achieved the highest rating in the category customer satisfaction. Sulzer Elbar thereby ranked above both third party and OEM service providers. This ranking indicates appreciation of quality of work, technical know-how, and price level. As a result, Frost & Sullivan has given Sulzer Elbar the Customer Engineering Award for customer satisfaction in gas turbine services.

Sulzer Pumps Brasil will supply three diesel-hydraulic- driven firewater pumping units to the Jurong shipyard for installation on the Petrobras P-50 FPSO production vessel. Each unit consists of a booster pump ZE8 400-500/67 driven by a 1566 kW Caterpillar diesel engine and a hydraulic-driven submerged lift pump BKn 450-450-1s/030. This arrangement avoids the complication of long pump drive shafts or submerged electric motors for this critical service and thereby increases reliability. Sulzer Pumps Brasil is responsible for the entire package including full containerization, all auxiliary systems, and full load string testing.

Metaplas Ionon, a company of the Sulzer Metco division, with headquarters in Bergisch Gladbach recently opened an additional surface treatment plant in Niederwürschnitz near Chemnitz (DE). The location will be expanded; the prerequisite conditions for plants are already in place. Components are treated here using the IONIT® process for protection against wear and/or using the IONIT OX® process for protection against corrosion. In cooperation with the company KoKi Technik GmbH, a “shop-in-shop” solution has been established. In particular, the local automobile industry can now be directly served on-site. Cost-intensive and time-consuming delivery efforts are thus eliminated.

Sulzer Hexis Ltd and Gaz de France SA, one of the leading European natural gas groups, have achieved the goal of their one-year cooperation: The results show that the architecture and performance of Sulzer Hexis’s fuel cell system are already close to the requirements of the French market. In view of the promising results, the two companies are considering a further cooperation, also with regard to the market launch of the next generation of Sulzer Hexis fuel cells.
