| Gas Turbine Repair in New Facility (02/12/2003, Technical News) |
|

| Test Rig for Abradable Coatings in Labyrinth Seals (05/01/2004, Technical News) |
|
Sulzer Innotec has upgraded its abradable-coatings test facility in Winterthur (Switzerland). Over the last few years, the rig has become the industrial standard for testing and benchmarking abradable coatings. As of July 2003, Sulzer Innotec is able to offer a labyrinth seal test configuration for the development and validation of abradable coatings applied to stationary surfaces inside labyrinth seals. Such seals are typically found in gas and steam turbines. The tests can be run under close-to-engine operating conditions with respect to temperatures, circumferential speeds, and incursion rates, with a flexibility to adapt to customer needs. The infrastructure is that of a large turbine balancing facility (incl. safety bunker).

| Pumps and Agitators to the Largest Board Line in the World (19/01/2004, Technical News) |
|
Sulzer Pumps’ Pulp and Paper segment (PPI) will deliver almost 300 pumps and 160 Salomix™ mixing technology products to the largest board line in the world. Metso Paper will supply this board line to Ning Shing Development Co. in Ningbo, Zheijiang Province, China. Per year, the mill will produce 700,000 tons white-lined chipboard. The start-up is planned for the middle of 2004.
Sulzer Pumps was selected to supply the pumps and agitators because it utilizes the most advanced pumping and mixing technology, combined with application know-how, low power consumption, and a high degree of standardization. All this will increase the mill reliability and reduce the energy cost as well as spare parts inventory to a minimum.

| VW Increases Rotating Plasma Spraying Capacity (03/02/2004, Technical News) |
|
Sulzer Metco’s plasma coating technology is being adopted even more in the automotive industry as a result of new orders being placed by Volkswagen (VW) of Germany. The inner walls of the cylinder bores of VW’s V10 TDI diesel engine – for the Touareg and Phaeton models – are coated by using the RotaBlast®, RotaClean™, and RotaPlasma® technologies. The aim is to almost triple coating capacity, in line with engine production plans.
The benefits of these high-tech coatings include the provision of an optimum friction coefficient and corrosion protection. Furthermore, engine blocks become more compact and lighter by avoiding heavy, bulky, and expensive cast iron liners.
