Sulzer Pumps Main Supplier in Modernization Project for Minatitlán Refinery (10/08/2006, Technical News)
Set of 14 OHH pumps for the Minatitlán project ready for final inspection.
Mexican state oil company PEMEX is investing over USD 2.2 billion to expand the 100-year old Minatitlán refinery in Veracruz State (MX). In late 2004, Sulzer Pumps was awarded the project’s first pump package and continued this success through 2005 to establish Sulzer Pumps as the preferred pump supplier to PEMEX’s Minatitlán refinery.

PVD-Arc Technology Improves High-Performance Precision Tools (27/06/2006, Technical News)
AlTiNmod-coated drills for circuit boards
The characteristics of modern high-performance tools for the machining of demanding materials are influenced by the material and geometry of the tools and significantly by the tools’ surface. If the tools’ surface is treated and coated, its resistance against wear through abrasion, oxidation, adhesion, chemical reaction, fatigue, and thermal shock can be significantly increased. To reduce wear for sharp cutting edges, which bring down the machining forces, PVD-coatings are especially suited. Metaplas Ionon, a subsidiary of Sulzer Metco, develops nanocrystalline Saturn coatings for highly demanding machining tasks.

Sulzer Pumps Provides Pumps for Southern Nevada Water Authority (31/05/2006, Technical News)
Sulzer Pumps
Sulzer Pumps Houston (SPHO) received a large order to manufacture 20 pumps for the Southern Nevada Water Authority for installation at the Alfred Merritt Smith water treatment facility at the shore of Lake Mead. This facility can treat up to 600 million gallons (2.3 million m3) of water per day. This order represents the largest nonnuclear order ever received by Sulzer Pumps in the US.

Multi-Channel Measurement (16/05/2006, Technical News)
Sulzer Innotec
Registering dynamic processes in machines often requires multi-channel measurements. In order to record multiple vibration modes, the acceleration in 3 coordinate directions needs to be measured simultaneously at numerous locations on the structure. It may also be necessary to register signals for force, pressure, noise, or rotational speed. In the middle of 2005, Sulzer Innotec put into operation a new measuring system with 56 channels and high sampling rate, which can carry out such complex tasks. The application range of the new device spans tasks like the identification of noise sources on stationary and moving objects with a microphone array, the vibration analysis of Diesel engines, and vibration tests on paper machines.

New Maxit® W-C:Hmod Coatings with Reduced Friction (03/04/2006, Technical News)
Clamping tools coated <br>with Maxit® W-C:Hmod
Friction, adhesion, and abrasion influence the operability and the service life of various technical processes and installations. The new W-C:Hmod coatings by Metaplas Ionon, a Sulzer Metco company, have been developed on the basis of the well-proven W-C:H coatings. The layers are applied at 200 °C using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). The structured multi-layer composition of the metallic DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating reduces tribological influences like friction and adhesion. Because graphite layers are incorporated in the coating, it is possible to combine reduced friction with outstanding performance during dry-running operation. Due the exceptional structure of the layer, pitting and tribooxidation can be avoided.
