Sulzer assumes its responsibility towards economic, social, and ecological stakeholders. Sustainable economic success, sound corporate social responsibility and energy-efficient solutions are the pillars of Sulzer’s sustainability strategy. “Sustainability is at the core of our business and is part of our overall strategy. We assume our social responsibility and provide solutions with economic and ecological benefits for a more sustainable world,” wrote CEO Ton Büchner in the Sulzer Annual Report 2010.
Significantly fewer accidents
With concerted measures, Sulzer has reduced the frequency of accidents by more than 60% since 2006. In 2010, the accident frequency rate decreased by 20% to 4.4 cases per million working hours. The severity of accidents was lowered by 31% to 60.4 lost days per million working hours. Environmental product declarations introduced
Sulzer’s energy-efficient solutions make an important contribution to a sustainable world. With the scarcity of conventional resources, stricter emissions regulations, and growing concerns about climate change, customers increasingly request energy-efficient solutions with economic and ecological benefits. In the field of pumping technology, for instance, studies show that over 99% of energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions occur from the use of pumps at client sites. Starting this year, Sulzer is therefore publishing environmental product declarations with transparent information about the energy efficiency of specific products. They cover the entire product life-cycle (including procurement, production and usage) and also include costs and climate-related data. The environmental product declarations can be found under www.sulzer.com/epd.
Measures to improve energy efficiency
Sulzer aspires to design environmentally friendly production processes. In 2010, some sites conducted extensive product tests for large projects, which is the main reason for the increase in carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption by 9% and 10%, respectively. Measures were initiated to improve energy efficiency. Comprehensive information about the company’s ecological performance is available under www.sulzer.com/sustainability/eco.
Sulzer publishes a comprehensive sustainability report every second year—in accordance with internationally recognized GRI-G3 guidelines. In the intervening years the company releases online updates of all relevant performance indicators. The external assurance company Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) annually reviews the sustainability data.
