| Consolidated order intake for 2000 by the Sulzer Corporation totalled CHF 5775 million, 7% higher than in prior year. Growth adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures was 11%, and 7% after adjustment for currency effects. Sulzer Medica attained a nominal growth of 14% (8% adjusted for currency effects), while Sulzer Industries order intake rose nominally by 5%, or 10% adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures. | |

The Sulzer Board of Directors and Corporate Executive Management are currently evaluating the most appropriate way and timeframe for separating the medical device and industrial businesses. With increasingly independent development of the two business sectors, the retention of Sulzer Pumps in the industrial portfolio is under examination. The positive integration of Ahlstrom Pumps, good divisional results for 2000 and encouraging prospects for the coming year promise a high value enhancement potential for the Sulzer shareholders.
Among the planned divestitures, that of Sulzer Turbo was already announced in December 2000. Negotiations for the sale of Sulzer Infra and Sulzer Textil are currently underway, while the divestiture of Sulzer Burckhardt is to be initiated in the second half of 2001.
The figures reported in this press release are already adjusted to the new situation.
Sulzer Medica sales (equivalent to order intake) for 2000 totalled CHF 1347 million (+14%), a rise of 8% after adjustment for currency effects. Both Sulzer Medica divisions contributed to this good result with double-digit increases. Orthopedics Division sales rose by 13% (7% adjusted for currency effects) to CHF 1098 million. Cardiovascular Division sales increased by 19% (9% adjusted for currency effects) to CHF 249 million.
Order intake by Sulzer Industries was 5% higher than in prior year at CHF 4445 million. The encouraging growth adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures is 10%, 7% after adjustment for currency effects.
Sulzer Services and Equipment (Sulzer Metco and Sulzer Turbomachinery Services; now without Sulzer Turbo and Sulzer Burckhardt) order intake rose steeply by 20% to CHF 492 million. The recently acquired Interturbine companies are not included in these figures; they will be consolidated only as of 1.1.2001.
Sulzer Chemtech order intake grew by 18% to CHF 275 million. The investment revival in the petrochemical markets is only slowly taking effect on Sulzer Chemtech business. The margin development is still unsatisfactory.
Sulzer Pumps order intake increased substantially by 38% to CHF 869 million (14% adjusted for acquisitions). Both the existing and new (ex Ahlstrom Pumps) units contributed to this growth.
Sulzer Infra registered a 7% rise in order intake to CHF 1465 million. Sulzer Textil likewise booked 7% more orders than in prior year at CHF 704 million. Sulzer Compression (Sulzer Turbo and Sulzer Burckhardt) increased order intake by 15% to CHF 513 million.
Operating income before goodwill amortization and exceptional items is expected to exceed the prior year level significantly. The savings expected in 2000 from the Sulzer Industries “Performance” efficiency enhancement program have been realized in full. As announced earlier, the accounts for 2000 are affected by substantial nonrecurring costs for corporate realignment.
The Sulzer and Sulzer Medica financial results for 2000 will be published at the annual press conference on Friday March 9, 2001.
