Sulzer delivers pumps for demanding applications and, at the same time, continuously improves the technology in order to be able to meet tomorrow’s customer challenges. In accordance with the testing requirements of these two tasks, Sulzer operates test beds all over the world - each dedicated to the needs of specific products and markets.
Some of the world’s largest and most powerful pumps have been designed, manufactured, packaged and tested at Sulzer's Leeds factory for customers on all continents. The extensive facilities ensure the highest quality production from design and machining through to assembly and testing. The unique gas turbine drive test bed can fully string test pump packages of up to 30 MW.
This enormous facility is equipped with the required systems to test pumps driven by gas turbines of up to 30 MW, large diesel engines, and high-voltage electric motors. Recent modifications to the power grid gave Sulzer in the UK access to 45 MW of electrical power and two in-house Variable-Frequency Drives (VFD). The test bed provides sufficient space to install multiple skids, including pump and driver, and, if required, the contract VSD plus all of the support equipment, such as mechanical seal and lubrication systems.
Subsea test bed
Sulzer continuously develops and improves the testing methods for new products and for machines. For example, the demand for subsea pumping is growing, along with the requirements that pumps operating under water have to fulfill.
To be able to test subsea processing equipment under realistic conditions, Sulzer is investing in a dedicated multiphase subsea test bed in the UK. This state-of-the-art addition to the already impressive string testing facilities in Leeds will position Sulzer as the market leader with respect to pump-testing facilities. In this installation, it will be possible to examine subsea pump/motor packages with weights approaching 100 tons in water depths of up to 10 m.
