Sulzer reports a high order intake of CHF 3 330.9 million for the first nine months of 2008. This represents an adjusted1 increase of 13.1% and a nominal growth of 4.8% compared with the same period in the previous year. The order intake increase was driven by Sulzer Pumps, which achieved strong double-digit growth in the first nine months of 2008. The outlook for the full year 2008 remains positive, despite the current global economic environment. The currency translation impact will remain significant.

Sulzer Turbo Services to Expand Presence in South America (29/08/2008, Media Release)

Sulzer has signed an agreement to acquire the privately owned turbomachinery service-provider Capime. The company is based in Argentina and serves customers across South America. It achieved sales of approximately CHF 13 million in 2007 and employs around 90 persons. With this acquisition, Sulzer Turbo Services will expand its business in South America and strengthen the platform for further growth in that region.

Operating Income Increased by 28% (22/08/2008, Media Release)

In the first half of 2008, Sulzer continued its successful development. In overall strong markets, the company further increased order intake, sales, operating income (EBIT), net income, and cash flow despite substantial negative currency effects. Return on sales significantly increased to 12.9%. The outlook for the full year 2008 remains positive, with expected increases in sales and operating income compared with the prior year. Sulzer’s high-quality order backlog builds a solid base for continued resilience in the future. The midrange targets for the divisions are being raised for return on sales from above 11% to above 12% and return on capital employed from above 20% to above 25%.

This represents an adjusted1 increase of 14.9% and a nominal growth of 6.2% compared with the first half of the previous year. The order intake increase was driven by Sulzer Pumps, which achieved very strong growth in the first six months of 2008. For the coming months, Sulzer expects continued strong demand in most of its main markets, while the currency translation impact will remain significant.
